Mozilla Adds AI Chat Feature to Firefox, User Opt-In Required
Mozilla is integrating an AI-powered "Smart Window" feature into its Firefox browser, offering chat capabilities to assist users with browsing. The feature is opt-in and available to users in the U.S. and Canada.

Mozilla has begun rolling out an AI-powered feature called "Smart Window" for its Firefox browser, allowing users to interact with an AI chat interface directly within the browser. This new functionality, developed in partnership with AI search provider Exa, aims to answer user questions and assist with content on open tabs and the broader internet.
A key aspect of the rollout is Mozilla's emphasis on user choice. The Smart Window feature is not enabled by default and requires users to opt in. Individuals can toggle the feature on or off at any time or temporarily disable it, aligning with Mozilla's approach to integrating AI while respecting user preferences.
The Smart Window utilizes Exa's AI search capabilities to provide answers. It can address queries related to content within open browser tabs or retrieve information from the web. When a user asks a question, the AI formulates a search query for Exa, which then processes the request using its custom AI models and extensive web crawl data. Both companies state that user data from these specific AI interactions is not retained.
Mozilla, historically a proponent of open-source technology and user control, positions this feature as an enhancement that complements traditional browsing. The company aims to provide users with a choice in how they access information, whether through standard browsing or AI-assisted tools. Future developments may involve the AI assisting with browser configuration or even generating code for extensions.
