Munich Construction Sites Cause Traffic Chaos Through 2026
Munich is experiencing one of its most challenging construction seasons in years, with numerous large-scale projects leading to significant traffic disruptions and detours across the city.
Munich, Germany, is currently grappling with severe traffic congestion due to a confluence of major construction projects on key routes. The city faces extensive roadworks that are expected to continue through autumn 2026, impacting essential transportation arteries.
The ADAC Südbayern organization reports that the situation marks one of the most difficult traffic periods in recent years. Significant disruptions are occurring on the Mittleren Ring (ring road), the Donnersbergerbrücke overpass, Fürstenrieder Straße, Föhringer Ring, and the A995 motorway sections near Giesing and Munich-Süd. These combined projects are heavily burdening residents and commuters.
Alexander Kreipl, a traffic expert at ADAC Südbayern, explained that many of the affected structures date back to the 1960s and 1970s and require urgent renovation. Large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the Tram-Westtangente tram line, are also underway with the aim of improving the city's transport network long-term. However, Kreipl expressed concern over the coordination of various construction efforts, particularly between Föhringer Ring works and city-led projects, noting that parallel disruptions significantly increase the strain on commuters and residents.
The most critical bottleneck currently is the renovation of the Luise-Kiesselbach-Tunnel. Its eastern tube, heading north, is fully closed until August 2nd, following significant damage from a truck fire in early 2024. Repairs to the tunnel ceiling and safety systems are ongoing, with traffic being rerouted via Garmischer Straße, which has already resulted in substantial queues and increased traffic in adjacent residential areas.
Other major ongoing works include the refurbishment of the Donnersbergerbrücke, the renewal of the Landshuter Allee bridge over Dachauer Straße (expected to last until late 2026), and extensive projects along Fürstenrieder Straße involving the Tram-Westtangente construction, utility line replacements, and bridge works near the A96. Additionally, the replacement of the Kreuzhofbrücken bridges at the A95 Kreuzhof junction is scheduled to continue until the second quarter of 2027, further compounding travel difficulties on an already heavily utilized route.
