Museum Nord develops AR app for Viking Age experiences
Museum Nord is developing an augmented reality (AR) mobile application, offering an interactive way to explore Viking Age life at its museum sites.

The Lofotr Viking Museum in Lofoten, Norway, is developing a new augmented reality (AR) mobile application aimed at revolutionizing how visitors experience the Viking Age.
The project, described with comparisons to the popular game "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" and the TV series "Vikings," seeks to virtually recreate Viking Age farms and medieval buildings on the museum's grounds.
The application utilizes the phone's GPS and camera to display virtual structures, burial mounds, and past inhabitants directly within the museum's environment. Users can, for example, enter a virtual chieftain's house, search for artifacts, and learn about Viking Age daily life and building traditions.
The goal is to provide an authentic and immersive experience where visitors can choose the information they wish to receive. The app is designed to adapt based on the user's location within the museum area, showcasing different historical periods from the Viking Age to the early Middle Ages. This technological approach may represent a new method for presenting history in Norwegian museums.
