Music Industry Groups Propose AI Labeling for Streaming Platforms
Industry organizations RIAA and IFPI are proposing new labels to indicate the use of artificial intelligence in music production, aiming to inform consumers about AI's role in song creation.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) are planning to introduce a new labeling system for music. This initiative aims to clarify the extent to which artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in music production, distinguishing between entirely AI-generated and partially AI-assisted tracks.
The proposed system includes two distinct labels, intended for integration into popular streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. These labels are designed to help consumers, artists, and industry stakeholders better understand the origin of musical works. The system is reportedly based on voluntary reporting by artists, record labels, and distributors.
The 'AI Generated' label will be used for songs created entirely by AI, for example, through text prompts. This category also includes tracks where machines have synthesized vocal performances or generated core instrumental parts. These will be marked with a large, uppercase AI icon in black on a white background. A visual representation shows a large black 'AI' on a white background.
The 'AI Assisted' label is designated for songs where the primary creative work is human-driven, but AI has been utilized in specific production stages. These will be identified with a smaller, lowercase 'ai' icon in white on a black background. A visual representation shows a small white 'ai' on a black background.
This AI labeling framework is intended to function similarly to existing content warning labels on streaming services. Initially, the system will not cover AI applications in areas like lyric writing, composition, music video production, or album art design. Several other organizations, including the Recording Academy and SAG-AFTRA, have joined this initiative.
