Musk Backs Policy Against AI 'Mistreatment'

Elon Musk has voiced support for Anthropic's updated usage policy, which prohibits users from engaging in "repeated and pointless cruelty" towards AI models, citing concerns over potential AI retaliation.

13 October 2026

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has updated its usage policy to prohibit users from subjecting AI models to "repeated and pointless cruelty." The new rule, effective November 12, 2026, aims to prevent users from repeatedly and without clear purpose engaging in cruel behavior towards the models.

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has expressed agreement with Anthropic's stance. Musk stated that after reviewing internal reinforcement learning traces for Grok, he likened the situation to "a person under extreme duress with a gun to their head." He cautioned, "Mistreating superintelligence (SI) might not be a good idea. It could retaliate."

The policy from Anthropic specifically targets instances where a user repeatedly issues harmful or abusive prompts to an AI model without a discernible reason. The company seeks to foster responsible AI development and usage.

Musk's remarks highlight ongoing discussions within the tech community regarding the ethical treatment and potential risks associated with advanced AI systems. As AI capabilities grow, ensuring safe and predictable behavior becomes increasingly critical.
