Musk Calls for AI Labs to Collaborate on Safety, Offers Reconciliation with OpenAI's Altman
Elon Musk is urging AI laboratories to cooperate on reviewing the safety of new models before release and suggests reporting risks to governments. He indicated a willingness to work with OpenAI's Sam Altman for global interests.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has called for AI laboratories to collaborate to prevent potential dangers. In an interview with The Economist, Musk emphasized that due to the rapid advancement of AI models, companies in the sector should jointly review the safety of new models before their release. He suggests that potential risks should be reported to both Washington and Beijing.
Musk stressed that this collaborative mechanism should not be limited to US companies alone, but that Chinese AI developers should also be included. He believes that even the most competitive companies may need to cooperate to ensure the safety of increasingly powerful AI models.
When asked about his willingness to cooperate with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Musk responded affirmatively. "If we must talk in the end, then we will talk. For the sake of the whole world, I am willing to put personal grievances aside," Musk stated.
Musk has previously been an outspoken critic of Altman and OpenAI, accusing them of abandoning the company's original non-profit mission for commercial interests. He has also opposed US attempts to ban the use of Chinese AI models, believing it will not significantly slow China's development.
