Musk: China's manufacturing capacity can exceed global total
Elon Musk stated that China's manufacturing capacity can surpass global totals once it masters a product's production.
Elon Musk commented on X, formerly Twitter, regarding China's rapid manufacturing scaling capabilities. He suggested that once China masters the production methods for a specific product, its capacity to expand production often exceeds the combined capacity of the rest of the world.
The discussion Musk joined centered on Chinese memory manufacturer Changxin Memory, which analysts identify as a growing competitor to established firms like Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix in the global DRAM market. Changxin Memory currently holds approximately 9.5% of the DRAM market share.
However, analysts caution that the market might be overstating the immediate impact of Changxin's new technology. The company still needs to demonstrate competitive yields, pricing, and production volumes, and its current advancements primarily target traditional DDR5 server memory, not the more advanced High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
Musk cited the lithium battery and solar industries as examples where China's production expansion has been significant. He also noted that while SpaceX leads in payload-to-orbit capacity, China's total orbital payload mass now surpasses all other countries combined, excluding SpaceX. Musk indicated that the memory industry could follow a similar trajectory of rapid Chinese advancement.
