Musk: OpenAI's Founding Accelerated AI Race Unintentionally

xAI founder Elon Musk commented in an interview that his efforts to curb power concentration in artificial intelligence (AI) may have inadvertently accelerated its development. Musk initially co-founded OpenAI to counterbalance Google's then-dominant position in the AI field.

However, Musk described the outcome as contrary to his intentions. He noted that the creation of OpenAI, and the subsequent spin-off leading to Anthropic, has created a chain reaction that has actually sped up AI development. Musk expressed concern that "all roads eventually lead to AI acceleration."

Musk has been a vocal critic of OpenAI's transformation from a non-profit research lab to one of the world's most valuable AI companies. His legal dispute with OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman alleges that OpenAI has strayed from its founding mission. A federal judge dismissed Musk's claims in May.

In the interview, Musk also suggested Anthropic's origin stemmed from a distrust of Altman within OpenAI. Despite personal disagreements with Altman and other AI leaders, Musk emphasized the importance of safety cooperation. "All competitors have an incentive to monitor each other to ensure other companies remain honest," Musk stated.

He proposed that competitors could review new models and identify issues. If developers do not adequately address risks, he believes governmental intervention would be warranted.
