Mysterious Cameras Watched Florida Roads, Ownership Unknown

St. Lucie County, Florida, has uncovered a mysterious network of surveillance cameras monitoring its roads. The county identified a total of 14 unpermitted cameras installed along its roadways. While three of these devices were identified as belonging to local law enforcement agencies, the remaining 11 cameras remain unaccounted for.

Authorities are taking steps to remove the unauthorized equipment. Erick Gill, St. Lucie County Communications Director, stated that a 30-day notice has been issued for the removal of the unidentified cameras. Following this period, the county plans to dismantle or disable the cameras.

The discovery occurred shortly after the county voted to uninstall its own fleet of Flock automated license plate readers. These readers have faced scrutiny over privacy concerns and potential data misuse. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had previously pledged to remove similar cameras from state highways in response to public outcry.

This situation is part of a broader debate surrounding the use of surveillance technology. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have voiced concerns about the potential misuse of license plate readers, with legislative proposals introduced in Congress to ban Flock cameras and similar systems nationwide.
