NACD's Report Guides Boards on Strategy Execution Oversight
The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has introduced a new "Align-Monitor-Calibrate" framework to equip boards with tools for effectively overseeing strategy execution amid a rapidly changing business landscape.

The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) has released its 2026 Blue Ribbon Commission report, "Board Oversight of Strategy Execution," introducing a new "Align-Monitor-Calibrate" framework. This model aims to clarify the role of boards in overseeing strategy execution within a rapidly evolving environment where traditional review cycles are no longer sufficient.
The report highlights that rapid shifts in the business landscape, driven by factors like technological advancements and geopolitical volatility, necessitate more active and continuous board engagement in monitoring strategy implementation. According to an NACD survey, a majority of directors in both public and private companies report an increase in strategy discussions within the boardroom.
The new framework provides a structured approach to help boards discern when to lean in more actively and when to step back, allowing management to fulfill its responsibilities. The objective is to ensure focused and intentional board engagement without the board assuming management roles.
The "Align-Monitor-Calibrate" model consists of three stages: aligning on strategy execution goals and assumptions, monitoring key signals during execution, and calibrating board involvement based on changing conditions. NACD states this will help boards add value at the most critical junctures.
