Nandan Nilekani: Asset Tokenisation Reaches Turning Point in India
Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani declared the era of asset tokenisation has arrived in India. Regulators and states are preparing to introduce new regulations and platforms.

Nandan Nilekani, a key architect behind India's Aadhaar identity system, stated at the Global Fintech Fest that the era of asset tokenisation is dawning in India. His pronouncements were backed by several significant developments concerning the digital representation and transferability of assets.
At the state level, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the state would pass legislation to tokenise land. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is considering gold tokenisation, and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) along with the RBI are set to launch Demat 2.0 and India's first tokenised corporate bond. Several companies have already begun issuing such bonds.
Nilekani explained asset tokenisation as packaging an asset with all its attributes into a single, portable unit. He drew parallels to government files and currency notes that contain all necessary information and value. This is anticipated to significantly expand the global market for tokenised assets.
For instance, tokenising cattle can facilitate access to loans in villages where local lenders struggle to assess livestock value and productivity. Through biometric identifiers and digital credentials, reliable data records are created for animals, enabling smoother loan processes. Similarly, tokenising warehouse receipts can improve farmers' bargaining power and create liquidity for stored produce, consolidating the farmer, crop, warehouse, and insurance into one transferable token.
