Nandan Nilekani, appointed by the Indian government to lead examination reforms, has proposed novel approaches to curb exam paper leaks that have plagued the nation's education system. Nilekani, also a co-founder of Infosys and the architect of India's Aadhaar and UPI digital infrastructures, shared his insights at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi.

Nilekani's core proposal involves leveraging artificial intelligence to generate exam papers only at the last minute, just before the examination commences. This, he explained, would eliminate the economic incentive for leaking or selling question papers in advance. By utilizing a massive question bank, AI could create a unique paper for each day, thereby removing the existence of a physical question paper and its associated risks.

As another key initiative, Nilekani advocated for the large-scale adoption of computer-based testing (CBT). This would necessitate expanding the existing nationwide network of testing centers. While India already utilizes computer-based exams conducted through private service providers like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) iON, their reach and security need enhancement.

Nilekani's suggestions come at a time when India's education system has been rocked by numerous exam paper leaks, including the recent NEET exam leak. The Indian government has been seeking technology-driven solutions to these systemic issues. However, it has been noted that technology alone may not suffice without addressing underlying problems such as corruption and accountability.
