Biotechnology firm Nanobiotix has presented early data from the first part of the CONVERGE Phase 2 randomized clinical trial evaluating its radio-enhancer, JNJ-1900 (NBTXR3), in patients with stage 3 inoperable non-small cell lung cancer. The data were presented at the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO 2026) annual meeting.

The study concluded that intratumoral injection of JNJ-1900 (NBTXR3) was feasible and safe in patients with stage 3 NSCLC. Among seven patients who completed chemoradiotherapy, JNJ-1900 (NBTXR3), and consolidative durvalumab, promising initial efficacy responses were observed. The overall response rate (ORR) was 85.7% (6/7 patients), with a complete response rate (CRR) of 57.1% (4/7 patients). This compares to the current standard of care, which shows very low complete response rates in this patient population.

Disease control was achieved in 100.0% (7/7 patients), with indications of potential long-term durability. Nanobiotix stated that the progressive improvement of response over time suggests this potential.

JNJ-1900 (NBTXR3) is a first-in-class radio-enhancer composed of functionalized hafnium oxide nanoparticles. It is administered via a single intratumoral injection and activated by radiotherapy. Nanobiotix believes its physical mechanism of action is adaptable to all solid tumors treatable with radiotherapy and suitable for combination therapies, particularly with checkpoint inhibitors.
