NASA has decided to employ a simpler spacesuit design for its initial human lunar surface missions, a move aimed at accelerating the program's timeline. The agency announced the shift during an internal meeting this week, with the goal of landing humans on the Moon's South Pole as early as 2028.
Under the direction of Artemis Program Manager Jeremy Parsons, NASA will collaborate with Axiom Space to develop a "Sortie Suit" variant of the planned lunar spacesuit. This decision reflects concerns about the existing timeline for the Artemis IV mission and subsequent lunar landings.
The "Sortie Suit" is intended for use on initial landing missions, utilizing landers developed by both SpaceX and Blue Origin. Key objectives for the new suit include reducing its mass, decreasing complexity, and simplifying interfaces between the suit and the lunar landers.
