NASA Swift Observatory scheduled for atmospheric re-entry

NASA officials confirmed that the Swift Observatory will descend into the atmosphere on Wednesday, approximately 22 years after its initial launch. Efforts to boost the aging spacecraft into a higher, more sustainable orbit were unsuccessful, leaving re-entry as the terminal stage of its mission.

The telescope, which weighs roughly 3,200 pounds and stands 5.6 meters tall, is expected to mostly disintegrate during its passage through the atmosphere. NASA representatives stated that while the majority of the structure will burn up, certain hardware components may survive the descent and reach the surface.

This event highlights the ongoing challenge of space debris management as older satellites reach the end of their functional lifespans. The observatory was initially deployed to study gamma-ray bursts, providing data on some of the universe's most energetic events.
