NASA updates lunar landing architecture for Artemis missions

NASA officials detailed significant adjustments to its lunar landing mission architecture on Friday, targeting a 2028 timeline for human return to the Moon. The updated strategy marks a formal shift in how spacecraft will interface during transit.

Under the revised plan for SpaceX, the Orion crew vehicle will dock with the Starship lander in high-Earth orbit rather than the previously discussed lunar-adjacent locations. For Blue Origin, the agency outlined a four-launch sequence for the New Glenn rocket. The architecture also permits the Blue Moon lander to rendezvous with Orion in low-lunar orbit.

The adjustments address technical challenges that have previously hindered mission planning. By clarifying the logistics for both SpaceX and Blue Origin, NASA aims to stabilize the supply chain required for sustained surface operations.
