NASA's Perseverance Rover to Set New Mars Driving Distance Record
NASA's Perseverance rover is set to break the record for the longest distance driven by a human-made vehicle on another planet. The rover has already traveled over 45 kilometers on the Martian surface.

NASA's Perseverance rover is on the verge of setting a new record for the farthest distance traveled by a human-made vehicle on another planet. This week, the rover will surpass 45.16 kilometers (28.06 miles) driven on the Martian surface, exceeding the previous record held by the Opportunity rover, which lost contact with NASA in 2018.
The Perseverance rover's ability to achieve this distance in approximately one-third of the time Opportunity operated is attributed to its advanced autonomous navigation system. The rover uses cameras to capture images of its surroundings, which are then processed by its onboard computer to calculate the safest routes. This allows Perseverance to autonomously drive about 90% of its travel distance, unlike the Curiosity rover, whose older computer allows only about 10% autonomous driving.
This autonomous capability has significantly enhanced the efficiency of Perseverance's scientific explorations. Instead of landing in one spot and slowly traversing towards scientific targets, as Curiosity did in Gale Crater, Perseverance in Jezero Crater can quickly move between different areas of interest. This is crucial as the rover is studying ancient rock formations approximately 4 billion years old in Jezero Crater, some of which predate most rocks on Earth.
Scientists believe ancient Mars may have hosted large lakes or even oceans, and Perseverance is collecting data from these ancient terrains to better understand the planet's geological and environmental conditions and its potential for supporting life. While the current view of ancient Mars resembles Earth's Mojave Desert with water flows, the gathered data will help confirm or dispute this theory.
Perseverance is expected to continue operating on Mars for many years to come. While the Curiosity rover experienced significant wheel wear, Perseverance's wheels have shown better durability. NASA has also redesigned the actuators in the wheels, which were initially tested for 20 kilometers of travel but are now being certified for at least 100 kilometers or more. Powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), the rover is not expected to run out of power or consumables.
