National STEM Scholar Program Opens Applications for 2027 Cohort

Applications are now open for the 2027 National STEM Scholar Program, a joint initiative between the National Stem Cell Foundation and The Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University. The program annually selects 10 middle school science teachers to participate in advanced professional development and classroom project funding.

Selected participants will attend a week-long training session on the Western Kentucky University campus from May 30 to June 4, 2027. The program covers all travel, lodging, and meal expenses, and provides recipients with hardware, such as laptops, alongside stipends for technology and materials. These resources are intended to facilitate “big idea” classroom projects, ranging from robotics and 3D printing to environmental restoration programs.

The program was established to address the decline in STEM-educated graduates by engaging students during middle school, a critical period for academic trajectory. By supporting teachers, the organization aims to broaden the reach of STEM education to students who might otherwise lack access to such opportunities.

The deadline for applications is February 1, 2027. Candidates are selected based on the feasibility and impact of their proposed classroom projects.
