Scaleout Systems, a startup with NATO backing based in Uppsala, Sweden, is developing AI-driven systems designed for autonomous target detection and selection on small drones. These systems are intended for surveillance and attack missions, addressing the evolving needs of European militaries integrating AI and drones in modern warfare.

The company was originally founded in 2018 by researchers from Uppsala University, initially focusing on deploying machine learning models directly on hardware within commercial vehicles. However, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Scaleout Systems pivoted its focus towards defense applications.

"With the war in Ukraine and a shifting world, we realized that this technology can be very important to operationalize edge data and sensor data for machine learning to make sure that NATO allies have found that strategic advantage," said Andreas Hellander, co-founder and CEO of Scaleout Systems.

The developed technology allows for the use of smaller, more efficient AI models directly on drones, reducing reliance on external communication links and enhancing response times in complex environments. This advancement could significantly alter intelligence gathering and strike capabilities on the battlefield.
