Nato selects Saab's GlobalEye for airborne surveillance

During the recent Nato summit in Ankara, Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that the alliance will enter into formal discussions with Swedish aerospace company Saab. The proposed procurement aims to modernize Nato’s airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) capabilities, replacing current aging fleets with the GlobalEye system.

The GlobalEye platform integrates Saab’s proprietary Erieye Extended Range radar with a suite of sensors and command-and-control software, mounted on a Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft. The system is designed for multi-domain surveillance, enabling the detection of objects across land, sea, and air environments with high precision.

While the selection represents a significant milestone for Saab, the company clarified that no contract has been finalized and no order has been placed to date. Saab’s CEO, Micael Johansson, stated that the firm is proceeding to the negotiation phase to determine the project's scope and operational requirements.
