NCC to build new steel mill for SSAB in Luleå
NCC and SSAB have signed an agreement for the construction of a new steel mill in Luleå. The facility is part of SSAB's strategy for fossil-free special steel and is expected to be operational by the end of 2029.
Construction company NCC has signed an agreement with SSAB to build a new steel mill at Svartön in Luleå. The project is part of SSAB's strategy to transition to fossil-free special steel production and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2029.
Under the agreement, NCC will be responsible for the building and civil engineering work for the eastern half of the plant. This section will house two electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, and a direct strip rolling mill. The new mill will replace the existing furnace-based production system in Luleå.
SSAB views the new facility as a key component in the transformation of its Nordic production system. The company anticipates the mill will enhance flexibility and improve its cost position, while simultaneously reducing Sweden's carbon emissions by seven percent. NCC is noted for its capability in executing complex construction projects with a focus on sustainability.
The portion of the project undertaken by NCC covers approximately 40 hectares, including a building complex of about 15 hectares. NCC has previously collaborated with SSAB on a facility for fossil-free steel production in Oxelösund, which is expected to reduce Sweden's carbon emissions by three percent.
