NCC to convert historic factory building into rental units in Turku

Construction company NCC is set to convert the historic Sanitas building, originally built in the 1940s, into rental apartments in Turku. The building, which has also served as teaching facilities for the University of Turku, offers approximately 2,900 square meters of space that will be adapted for modern residential use.

The project also includes the construction of an extension of approximately 2,100 square meters and an underground parking garage. Upon completion, the property complex will comprise 75 rental apartments. Construction is scheduled to begin in late September 2026, with completion anticipated in summer 2028. NCC estimates the order value at approximately SEK 180 million.

The conversion aims to blend modern housing needs with the preservation of cultural and historical values. NCC has collaborated with the Turku University Foundation throughout the planning and implementation phases. The project will retain the building's original structural framework, restore its facade, and update the interior to meet contemporary residential standards.

This conversion of the Sanitas building into housing contributes to the development of the rapidly evolving Kupittaa district in Turku. A majority of the property's future returns will support the University of Turku and its research activities. NCC views such conversion projects as a key strategy for urban development and heritage preservation.
