NDR discusses disinformation's impact on local politicians

NDR Norddeutscher Rundfunk recently examined the growing threat of disinformation, including deepfakes and false news, in local politics through its program "NDR DIREKT". A discussion held at Leuphana University in Lüneburg highlighted that such misinformation is no longer confined to national politics but poses a real challenge to the daily work of local officials.

Thomas Otto, mayor of Saterland, shared his personal experience of being targeted by fake images. He described the situation as overwhelming and announced his decision not to seek re-election. Otto emphasized that many colleagues, particularly women, feel helpless and called for accessible reporting mechanisms for such incidents, stating that "everything is not happening fast enough."

Thorsten Massinger, president of the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office, stressed the importance of filing more reports. He urged victims to promptly report fabricated content to the respective platforms for removal, enabling legal action. Massinger also recommended utilizing support services like the "Starke Stelle" initiative, which assists local politicians targeted by hate campaigns.

The discussion also underscored the critical role of media literacy. Fabian Grischkat, a news influencer and video journalist, argued that social media platforms have lacked sufficient regulation and must take greater responsibility. He called for clearer requirements for labeling comments and news contributions. The need to strengthen media literacy through education was also highlighted, enabling citizens to better understand social media mechanisms and critically evaluate information.
