NDR Examines Disinformation's Impact on Local Democracy
NDR hosts a discussion in Lüneburg to analyze how disinformation affects local governance and communities. Methods for combating the phenomenon are explored.

Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) is delving into the effects of disinformation, or false information, on a local level through a live discussion broadcast from Lüneburg. The event, held as part of Hamburg's Press Freedom Week, examines how fake news and misleading online campaigns influence local administration and the democratic life of communities.
The discussion featured experts from various fields, including ARD's head of digital media, a local newspaper's editor-in-chief, a content creator, a police president, and a mayor whose decisions were impacted by a disinformation campaign. NDR journalist Susanne Stichler moderated the talk at Leuphana University. The audience and online viewers could participate by submitting questions via the NDR Niedersachsen app.
NDR aimed to highlight how disinformation is no longer solely targeting broad politics but is also shaping the daily lives in cities and municipalities. The discussion sought solutions for how local actors, journalists, and authorities can effectively confront and combat this phenomenon.
During the broadcast, the work of NDR's own verification units in exposing fake news on social media was also covered, emphasizing the role of technology and artificial intelligence, as well as the challenges involved. The topic was discussed more broadly, beyond Lüneburg, as part of the press freedom week.
