NearLink Protocol Stack Opens Source to HarmonyOS Community
The new generation short-range wireless communication technology, NearLink, has its protocol stack officially released as open source to the open HarmonyOS community. The move aims to lower hardware development barriers and foster ecosystem co-construction.
The OpenAtom Foundation announced on July 15, 2026, that the protocol stack for the NearLink technology, a new generation of short-range wireless communication, has been fully open-sourced to the open HarmonyOS community.
The initial release includes over one hundred thousand lines of code. The foundation stated the intention behind this release is to reduce hardware development thresholds and accelerate the deployment of the technology, along with co-building an ecosystem. The protocol stack provides a unified API interface, ensuring consistency between HarmonyOS and open HarmonyOS applications, enhancing connection performance, and enabling various Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios.
By making the NearLink protocol stack available to the open HarmonyOS community, the foundation expects to improve device connectivity experiences. The protocol stack features a layered architecture design, offering a standardized, modular, and scalable solution from the basic service layer to the basic application layer.
The basic service layer targets developers by offering a standardized connectivity foundation and encapsulating complex wireless connection processes into simple API interfaces. It also supports dual-channel transmission for low-latency, high-reliability data transfer. The basic application layer defines standards for interoperability between devices, enabling "plug-and-play" functionality and cross-brand compatibility for various devices.
