Nearly 10,000 Phone Numbers Blocked from Cybercriminals

German authorities have successfully blocked nearly 10,000 phone numbers exploited by cybercriminals in the last three months. The operation aimed to significantly weaken the criminals' infrastructure, particularly in connection with an international online investment fraud scheme.

The initiative, dubbed "Operation Herakles," is part of a larger anti-fraud strategy and has led to the deactivation of over 13,000 numbers, including both German and Austrian ones. The targeted fraud, known as "Cybertrading-Fraud," has become a widespread problem in recent years. Victims are lured into investing substantial amounts of money on fraudulent websites that lack regulatory approval.

As part of the scam, brokers operating from overseas call centers encourage victims to invest further. The operations are often so professionally executed that victims may not realize they are being defrauded for months. Authorities confirm that the funds collected are never channeled into actual investments.

Furthermore, the German Federal Network Agency has mandated telecommunication companies to tighten their number registration processes and prevent misuse. Operators are also required to enhance oversight of their resellers and partners. In collaboration with Europol and law enforcement agencies in other countries, over 2,000 illegal domains used to deceive consumers have also been taken offline.
