Neko Health's unflattering avatars spark debate on changing user behavior

Neko Health, the Swedish healthtech company founded by Hjalmar Nilsonne and Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek, has secured $500 million in Series C funding. The company specializes in preventative health through comprehensive body scans and personalized health reports.

The firm, which recently opened a new clinic in Stockholm and plans to expand to New York, provides clients with detailed health data. A core component of its service is the creation of a digital avatar based on the body scan.

These avatars, however, have become a point of contention. Some customers have described the images as unrealistically unflattering and even shocking. This has fueled debate about whether such depictions effectively motivate clients to adopt healthier lifestyles, or if they simply cause distress.

Hjalmar Nilsonne, however, suggests that many clients find their avatars inspiring, noting that approximately 80% of customers return annually, with loyalty increasing between their second and third scans. Neko Health has also expanded its service offerings to include more blood tests, circulation analysis, integration with wearables, and AI-driven body composition analysis to measure visceral fat.

Despite the substantial new funding, the long-term success of Neko Health's approach remains under observation. The company's trajectory will depend on its ability to demonstrate the lasting value of its service and its capacity to genuinely drive positive behavioral changes in its clients. Future plans include continued expansion and the development of new technologies to enhance its health offerings.
