Neste Highlights Top 5 Sustainability Trends for 2025

Neste Oyj, a renewable fuels and chemicals company, has identified the top five sustainability trends anticipated for 2025, emphasizing the ongoing shift away from fossil fuels and the evolving landscape of renewable energy.

The company's outlook points to a continued, though measured, transition driven by global agreements like COP28 and COP29. While COP28 set a precedent for moving away from fossil fuels, the recent COP29 focused on the financial mechanisms to achieve these goals, including tripling finance for developing nations to $300 billion annually by 2035.

Globally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects a significant increase in renewable energy capacity, nearly tripling installations between 2024 and 2030 compared to the previous seven years. The European Union is accelerating its renewable energy targets, aiming for 42.5% by 2030, up from 24.1% in 2023. China is also making substantial investments, expected to contribute 60% of the world's renewable capacity installations by 2030.

A key focus for 2025 will be replacing fossil fuels in transportation. Neste highlights the availability of renewable fuels, such as renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and lower-emission marine fuels, as viable drop-in alternatives. Continued innovation in raw materials and increased production capacity, driven by rising demand, are seen as crucial for scaling up these solutions and further displacing traditional fossil-based products in the transport sector.
