Neste Oil to Sell AdBlue in Consumer Packs

Neste Oil is introducing AdBlue, an aqueous urea solution used to reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel vehicles, in consumer packs starting October 2014. This initiative will make the product available at all Neste Oil service stations throughout Finland, catering to the needs of diesel car owners.

The new 1.89-liter packs are designed for easy use in passenger cars. Previously, AdBlue was primarily sold in bulk or larger containers for heavy-duty vehicles. This expansion comes in response to new Euro VI tailpipe emission regulations that impose stricter limits on new vehicles.

AdBlue works in conjunction with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, which convert NOx into nitrogen and water. While SCR technology has been common in trucks and buses for years, its adoption is increasing in medium and larger diesel cars and vans to meet the new emission standards. The SCR system requires AdBlue to function, and low levels can lead to reduced engine performance.

The 1.89-liter consumer packs will be available at Neste Oil stations and through distributors from October. AdBlue is a 32.5% solution of urea and demineralized water, stored in a separate tank, not mixed with fuel. It has a shelf life of 18 months when stored correctly.
