Neste Renewable Fuel Aids Outokumpu's Kemi Mine Towards Carbon Neutrality

Neste and Outokumpu are intensifying their collaboration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Outokumpu will replace fossil fuels used at its Kemi mine and Tornio steel mill, along with those of its contractors, with Neste MY Renewable Diesel. The adoption of this renewable fuel is projected to reduce the Kemi mine's annual emissions by nearly 11,300 tons, accounting for approximately 30% of the mine's overall carbon neutrality objective.

The renewable fuel reduces emissions from the mine's and mill's fleet and heavy machinery by an average of 90% over the fuel's lifecycle compared to fossil fuels. Neste's supply covers not only the machinery at the mine and mill but also the contractors' vehicles and transportation between the Kemi mine and Tornio mill. The mine aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.

Reaching carbon neutrality at the Kemi mine relies on three key factors: phasing out fossil fuels, utilizing low-emission electricity, and substituting natural gas and propane with alternative heating methods. According to Outokumpu, a carbon-neutral mine represents a multi-million euro investment and a reduction of nearly 40,000 tons in the company's total emissions.

Neste states this collaboration is its most extensive to date within the mining and steel industry in Europe. Neste's renewable diesel is a drop-in replacement for diesel engines, enabling immediate greenhouse gas emission reductions.
