Neste starts renewable propane production in Rotterdam

Neste has launched the world's first large-scale production facility for renewable propane in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The initial shipment of the fully renewable propane has been delivered to the European market. The company isolates the renewable propane from process gases generated at its refinery.

The production facility has an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes. SHV Energy will act as the exclusive distributor, supplying 160,000 tonnes of the product to its customers across Europe over a four-year period. The renewable propane will be marketed under the name BioLPG.

BioLPG allows users of fossil fuels to reduce their carbon footprint without requiring modifications to existing gas application technology. It can be used in a wide range of applications, including transport, commercial heating, and retail cylinder markets.

"The start-up of the new production facility represents a significant step in implementing our growth strategy for renewable products," stated Kaisa Hietala, Executive Vice President of Renewable Products at Neste. SHV Energy CEO Fulco van Lede highlighted the product's environmental benefits, particularly for areas not connected to natural gas grids.

Neste's Rotterdam refinery primarily produces Neste MY Renewable Diesel from waste, residues, and vegetable oils. The new propane production line utilizes refinery side streams, aligning with Neste's circular economy objectives.
