Neste to Invest Over EUR 400 Million in Porvoo Refinery Maintenance Shutdown

Neste Oyj announced a significant investment of over EUR 400 million for a major maintenance shutdown at its Porvoo oil refinery in Finland, scheduled to take place from August to October 2026. The shutdown, expected to last approximately nine weeks, is crucial for ensuring the refinery's safety, availability, and competitiveness.

The extensive maintenance program will involve essential tasks such as statutory inspections, scheduled maintenance, and equipment upgrades that require the refinery to halt production. An estimated 7,500 people will participate in the project, including approximately 1,000 Neste employees and experts from over 100 contracting companies. Neste noted that over 80% of the selected contractors are Finnish, supplemented by international specialists.

Neste has assured that fuel deliveries to customers will continue uninterrupted during the shutdown. Product stocks will be built up in advance, and the Kilpilahti port and distribution terminal will operate as usual. However, the shutdown will lead to a significant increase in traffic in the Kilpilahti area, with special traffic arrangements planned to mitigate impacts on local residents and other traffic.

Short periods of flaring and potential noise disturbances may occur during the refinery's shutdown and restart phases. Such comprehensive maintenance shutdowns are typical for oil refineries, occurring approximately every 2.5 to 3 years to maintain operational integrity.
