Neste's Transformation Story Told Through Its Employees
Oil company Neste has transitioned from fossil fuels to become a global leader in renewable solutions. The company's transformation is driven by employee innovation and dedication.

Finnish oil company Neste has undergone a significant transformation, shifting from traditional oil refining to becoming a global pioneer in renewable and circular solutions. Over its 75-year history, the company has pivoted from a primary focus on fossil fuels towards more sustainable alternatives.
The cornerstone of Neste's success is attributed to the contributions of its employees. Ulla Kiiski, one of the original developers of the key NEXBTL technology, emphasizes that innovation is in the company's DNA. Originally founded to secure Finland's oil supply, Neste experienced steady growth in its early decades through the establishment of refineries. Kiiski and her colleagues developed the patented NEXBTL technology, which enabled the replacement of fossil raw materials with renewable oils and fats, even utilizing waste and residues.
The first NEXBTL unit began producing renewable diesel in Porvoo, Finland, in 2007, proving the technology's viability on a commercial scale. This marked a crucial step in establishing Neste's renewable business. While the first patent for the technology was granted in 1997, its full implementation required additional time.
Increased pressure to reduce carbon emissions in the early 2000s led to a strategic decision to focus on growth in renewable fuels. This also spurred international expansion, with new refineries for renewable fuels opening in Singapore in 2010 and Rotterdam in 2011. Kenneth Lim, Refinery Director at Neste Singapore, highlights the importance of global operations in the fight against climate change.
Neste's transformation demonstrates how strategic decision-making and employee innovation can address global challenges and create new business opportunities in an industry undergoing significant change.
