Nestlé Deutschland AG's latest future study, titled 'How Does Germany Eat in 2040?', projects significant shifts in German eating habits by the year 2040, driven by climate change, personal health management, and artificial intelligence (AI). The research suggests a pragmatic adaptation by consumers to new conditions, including openness to alternative ingredients and digital tools.

The study identifies three core trends: Climate change is set to impact food availability, pricing, and production, turning it into a supply chain issue. Nutrition will increasingly be viewed as a form of personal health prevention, with individuals utilizing their diet to maintain long-term health and performance. AI is expected to evolve from a specific tool into an integrated daily assistant, connecting dietary information, health data, and purchasing habits.

Despite the anticipated changes, the study underscores the enduring importance of enjoyment and social connection. A striking 92 percent of respondents view food as a crucial source of pleasure, and 81 percent believe eating is most enjoyable when shared. While the specifics of food choices may evolve, the fundamental aspects of taste and community are expected to remain paramount.

Daniela Wippler, Head of Consumer and Marketplace Insights & Analytics at Nestlé Deutschland, commented that future eating will be more diverse and complex, requiring greater orientation, trust, and personal responsibility. Alexander von Maillot, CEO of Nestlé Deutschland, stated the company aims to shape the future of food to be healthier and more resilient without sacrificing enjoyment and connection, focusing on innovations that meet evolving needs while preserving taste and quality of life.
