Netflix and eBay's $2 Billion Moves Signal Shift in Creator Economy

The creator economy, valued at over $250 billion globally and growing at more than 20 percent annually, is showing signs of significant maturation. The first half of 2026 saw a record 70 deals within the sector, a 23 percent increase year-over-year, with projections indicating over 100 deals by the end of the year.

While media companies represented the largest share of deals by number, the most substantial financial transactions were concentrated in software. eBay's $1.2 billion acquisition of resale app Depop and Netflix's $587 million purchase of Ben Affleck's AI filmmaking startup InterPositive exemplify this trend. Other significant deals included Accenture Song's acquisition of agency Whalar for at least $500 million and various media group acquisitions.

These large-scale acquisitions, particularly those involving audience-facing platforms and content creation technologies, suggest a strategic shift. Companies are increasingly recognizing the inherent value of established audiences and the infrastructure that supports creators.

The United States accounted for 59 percent of all transactions, with North America representing 64.3 percent. The trend towards increased cross-border deals also indicates a globalizing landscape for creator economy investments.
