Netflix Launches Creator Initiative in India, Investing in Local Content

Streaming giant Netflix has launched the Netflix India Storytelling Initiative, a new program aimed at training and supporting creators across animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics (AVGC) sectors. This move signifies a deepening of the company's long-term investment in India.

The initiative involves partnerships with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). Through these collaborations, Netflix will train young talent for the entertainment industry. The NFDC partnership will also focus on training for accessibility roles, such as audio description writers and voice professionals, to enhance the accessibility of Indian films and series.

The announcement coincides with the visit of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos to India. Sarandos met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss India's growing influence in global entertainment and the potential of its media sector. Sarandos has previously highlighted India as one of Netflix's key growth markets, estimating 20-25 million paid subscribers in the country.

Sarandos also spoke about artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative force in entertainment production, comparing its impact to the shift from hand-drawn to computer-generated animation. Netflix is already utilizing AI in pre-visualization, production planning, visual effects, and post-production workflows. AI is expected to lower the cost of advanced filmmaking techniques, such as digital de-aging of actors, making them more accessible to creators.
