Netnod and SUNET Enhance Sweden's Crisis Communication Capabilities

Netnod, in collaboration with SUNET (part of the Swedish Research Council), has spent the last 18 months working to improve Sweden's capacity to maintain critical information dissemination and network traffic during emergencies.

The project, codenamed Särimner, aims to ensure that essential web-based services remain accessible during crises such as natural disasters, major accidents, or war. Another objective is to enable stable and secure traffic exchange between operators in Sweden.

An investigation revealed that Sweden's IT infrastructure is overly centralized around Stockholm, posing a risk of communication fragmentation during events like dam breaks, excavation work, or hostile actions. The Särimner nodes are designed for distributed placement across the country to deliver critical content even if the original source is unavailable. A proof-of-concept test included distributing information from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).

The project's conclusion highlights the need to develop a more decentralized network infrastructure in Sweden and to establish more fiber "meeting points." The goal is to create hundreds of new meeting points nationwide where Särimner nodes can be located, thereby increasing network redundancy and resilience in crisis situations.
