Netnod Deploys New DNS Root Server in Faroe Islands

Swedish internet infrastructure provider Netnod has deployed a new i-root server instance in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, enhancing the region's digital resilience and internet stability.

Netnod, a Swedish provider of critical internet infrastructure, has deployed a new instance of its i-root server in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, in cooperation with domain registry Økisnavn and network operator NET. This marks the second DNS root server instance located in the Faroe Islands.

The new deployment significantly enhances digital resilience for the Faroe Islands by introducing operator diversity, technical redundancy, and increased stability for all internet users in the region. With the Tórshavn instance, local DNS lookups can now rely on two independent local servers, improving network reliability.

This installation strengthens the internet's fundamental infrastructure in the region, reducing reliance on external servers and shortening lookup times. Such measures are crucial for preparedness against cyberattacks and other disruptions.

Netnod operates multiple i-root servers globally to ensure the stability and availability of the DNS system.
