PTP offers traceable time over dedicated fiber. The article contrasts PTP with GPS-based timing systems, highlighting GPS's drawbacks. These include signal interference, unpredictable latency, leap seconds, oscillator instabilities, and vulnerability to jamming and spoofing.

In the energy sector, accurate timing is essential for monitoring and balancing the power grid. Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), used to measure voltage and current, require highly precise timestamps. Even minor errors in timing can lead to incorrect synchrophasor data and significant consequences. The energy industry is actively integrating PTP into its applications.
