Network Rail and CATALYST Complete Pilot Project for Satellite-Based Risk Analysis on Wessex Route

Network Rail and CATALYST have completed a joint, exploratory pilot project focused on satellite-based risk analysis along the Wessex railway route. The initiative aimed to investigate how earth observation data, analyses derived from satellite imagery, and weather forecasts can contribute to the earlier detection of flood and vegetation risks.

The project's objective was to enhance track maintenance inspections and decision-making by leveraging advanced technologies. This effort is part of Network Rail's broader push to develop proactive maintenance strategies and mitigate risks to railway infrastructure, such as flooding and vegetation-related disruptions.

CATALYST provided expertise in remote sensing technologies and data analytics for the pilot. By combining satellite data, geographical information, and meteorological data, the pilot sought to create tools that assist in anticipating potential issues and targeting inspections more effectively. The goal was to reduce unforeseen disruptions and improve the safety and reliability of rail operations.

Findings from the pilot project are currently under evaluation. Network Rail is exploring the feasibility of applying the developed methodologies across its wider rail network in the future, aiming to enhance risk management and operational efficiency.
