Neuroscientist Argues Freud's Brain Theories Anticipated Modern Science

Sigmund Freud's theories on the brain and mind, often dismissed as outdated, actually anticipated many key findings in modern neuroscience, according to neuroscientist Mark Solms. In his book "The Only Cure: Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Healing," Solms, who is both a neuroscientist and a psychoanalyst, asserts that Freud's work laid groundwork for contemporary understanding of mental processes.
Solms highlights Freud's background as a neuroscientist who conducted extensive research on the nervous system in the late 1800s. Freud's contributions included work on neurons and the interpretation of synapses as the site of memory formation. His concept that "neurons that fire together, wire together" predates Donald Hebb's law by decades.
Furthermore, concepts introduced by Freud, such as unconscious mental functions, multiple memory systems (conscious, preconscious, unconscious), and the long-term impact of early childhood experiences on psychopathology, are now widely accepted in neuroscience and psychology. Solms also points to Freudian underpinnings in modern frameworks like predictive processing and embodied cognition.
Beyond theory, Solms emphasizes the medical efficacy of talk therapy. He notes that while psychiatric medications have an average effect size of 0.4, talk therapy achieves an average effect size of 0.8, classifying it as highly effective and underscoring its value as a medical treatment.
