Neuroscientists have identified a new, uncomfortable truth about becoming smarter: significant, long-term gains in intelligence, particularly in fluid intelligence, do not occur without effort. The findings, reported by Inc. Magazine, indicate that once a learned skill or knowledge becomes easy, its benefits for fluid intelligence largely disappear.

Fluid intelligence is defined as the ability to learn and retain new information and apply it to problem-solving and acquiring new skills. This contrasts with crystallized intelligence, which refers to accumulated knowledge and facts.

The research casts doubt on the effectiveness of popular brain-training methods, such as puzzles and cognitive apps, for enhancing fluid intelligence. While these activities may offer short-term mental stimulation, their capacity to permanently boost cognitive abilities is questioned.

Instead, the neuroscientists emphasize that true cognitive advancement requires engaging in challenging learning processes. Merely repeating familiar routines or completing easy tasks is insufficient for sustained improvement. The active application of knowledge and skills in new and demanding contexts is presented as key to developing lasting intelligence.
