The EDSAFE AI Alliance and Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation have released a new benchmark framework titled "Future-Proofing Human Flourishing: The Case for a Learning Sciences Benchmark for AI." This publication addresses the rapid and unmanaged proliferation of generative AI in K-12 classrooms.
Developed through collaboration with over 100 edtech developers, learning scientists, and civil rights advocates, the framework aims to move educational sectors beyond superficial guidelines. It calls for the immediate establishment of public infrastructure to evaluate AI tools before deployment.
The paper frames generative AI as a permanent infrastructural layer rather than a temporary trend. It warns of a potential "cognitive outsourcing crisis" if AI tutors supplant human guidance, risking diminished independent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
The new benchmark shifts AI tool evaluation from mere speed and accuracy to a holistic assessment against learning sciences.
