New bootloader grants full control over original Meta Quest hardware
Developers have released a new method to gain full root access to the original Meta Quest VR headset's hardware, allowing independent use without Meta services.
Developers have released a new open-source bootloader that provides full control over the original Meta Quest VR headset's hardware. Meta officially ceased support for the older VR headset in 2023, shifting focus to the Quest 2 and Quest 3.
The QuestStack project integrates known vulnerabilities in the Quest's Android fastboot process to achieve full system administrator privileges. The bootloader installation has been simplified to be executable through a web interface without separate file downloads after connecting the device to a computer.
This exploit allows the original Quest hardware to be completely decoupled from Meta's services. Users can now sideload applications without needing a Meta developer account and activating developer mode. Additionally, the device can be set up and logged into even if Meta eventually shuts down the servers that support it.
