New browser extension filters out low-quality brands on Amazon

A new browser extension named Knockoff aims to address quality concerns on Amazon's e-commerce platform. Developer Josh Pigford created the tool to simplify online shopping by removing obscure, low-quality, or questionable brands from search results. These brands often appear as random letter combinations rather than established names.

Pigford was motivated by personal frustration. While searching for grass trimmer parts, he struggled to find well-made tools, encountering numerous brands with little sales history and nonsensical names. He experienced a similar issue when searching for a dog bed, where results were dominated by brands like WNPETHOME and EHEYCIGA.

Knockoff works by comparing Amazon search results against a curated list of over 5,000 established brands. It scores lesser-known names based on their likelihood of being a "pseudo-brand." Users can also contribute to the tool's accuracy by reporting misclassifications. The extension is customizable with three intensity levels (Relaxed, Standard, Strict) and allows users to personally block brands or adjust how blocked retailers appear.

Upon its release to the public via social media, Knockoff quickly went viral, with its announcement post garnering over 10 million views. Many users expressed relief at the "deslopification" of Amazon. Pigford believes the tool resonates because consumers are overwhelmed by information and AI-generated content, seeking ways to discern what is genuine and trustworthy.
