New career pathways emerge, but evidence of effectiveness lags
Demand for AI skills is driving the creation of new career pathways, but data collection on their effectiveness remains fragmented across states.

Schools and states are rapidly developing new career pathways to meet a changing job market, fueled by a near tripling in demand for entry-level AI skills since last fall. However, a significant challenge remains in effectively tracking and proving the success of these programs.
A recent report examining work-based learning in 10 states revealed inconsistencies in definitions, data collection, and tracking infrastructure. Most states struggle to follow students from K-12 into higher education and the workforce, making it difficult to determine which career-connected learning experiences are yielding positive outcomes for students.
Nebraska offers an example of effective data utilization, where structured career-technical education pathways led to higher graduation rates and increased postsecondary enrollment. Despite these successes, the same study could not measure post-high school income, highlighting a critical data gap.
The federal government has a key role in building a system for evidence-based decision-making. Recommendations include improving longitudinal data systems, modernizing research infrastructure, and coordinating funding. This would equip students and educators with better tools to navigate a rapidly evolving world and ensure educational investments are effective.
