New Children's Book Explores Puppy Challenges and Rewards
Sharon O'Flaherty's "Problems with Pooski" is a new picture book detailing a family's experience with a mischievous puppy, highlighting lessons in patience and responsibility.

Author Sharon O'Flaherty has released "Problems with Pooski," a rhyming children's picture book inspired by her family's experience raising an English Springer Spaniel nearly 30 years ago. The book chronicles the journey of a rescued puppy whose playful antics test her new family's patience, while underscoring the responsibilities and bonds that develop when welcoming a pet.
The story follows a puppy named Pooski, found abandoned in a cardboard box, whose curiosity leads to chewed shoes and shredded homework. As the family grapples with the puppy's behavior, they face a dilemma regarding her future. The narrative explores themes of patience, forgiveness, and collaborative problem-solving.
O'Flaherty initially conceived the story as a poem following her family's own puppy experiences. She aimed to create a narrative that would resonate with other families, reflecting both the joy and challenges inherent in raising a young dog. The book is intended for children aged 3 to 8, as well as parents, educators, librarians, and animal enthusiasts.
The book seeks to foster conversations about responsibility and compassion, reminding readers that pets offer unconditional love despite making mistakes. O'Flaherty hopes the story will emphasize the importance of patience and forgiveness, lessons that extend beyond the experience of raising a puppy.
