New German truck toll: Impact on motorhomes clarified
Germany’s expanded toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tons took effect on July 1, 2024. While most motorhomes are exempt, certain vehicle configurations may trigger toll obligations.
As of July 1, 2024, Germany has expanded its truck toll system to include vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons. This updated framework links toll costs to carbon dioxide emissions. According to the ADAC, the vast majority of motorhomes remain exempt from these charges, as they are primarily designated for passenger transport rather than commercial freight.
However, potential issues arise for camping vehicles built on truck or bus chassis. Because these vehicles may not be visually distinguishable from commercial freight vehicles, they can attract the attention of electronic toll monitoring systems. This is particularly common for custom builds or older vehicles that may retain a commercial registration status.
To prevent administrative complications, experts advise owners to verify their vehicle’s registration status. While it is possible to remain toll-exempt even with a truck registration, the burden of proof lies with the owner to demonstrate to the operator, Toll Collect, that the vehicle is used exclusively for personal accommodation. Formally registering the vehicle as a motorhome is recommended to ensure clarity during official inspections.
