New Novel by Kaleb Erdmann Explores Erfurt School Shooting

Author Kaleb Erdmann has published his new novel, "Die Ausweichschule" (The Evacuation School), which addresses the 2002 school shooting at Gutenberg-Gymnasium in Erfurt. Erdmann, who was a fifth-grader at the time, experienced the event firsthand. The novel explores how to transform a catastrophe into art without resorting to sensationalism.

The incident, where a 19-year-old killed 16 people and himself, has left profound marks on the community. Erdmann stated that while his novel is fictional, he aimed for accuracy and respect toward the memory of the victims and their families. "It became clear to me early on that I am not alone in this story," the author commented.

The protagonist struggles for years to narrate his experiences literarily, consciously avoiding the tone of a true-crime podcast or sensational reporting. A turning point occurs when he meets a playwright planning a piece about the same event, which helps him confront his own recollections.

Erdmann stressed that he did not wish to fictionalize or glorify the perpetrator's actions. His goal is to initiate a discussion about the event and its impact. The author's courage in processing personal trauma through art has been noted, offering a new perspective on the aftermath of the tragedy.
