Developments in quantum computing continue to explore novel technologies for realizing qubits. Recent publications introduce quantum dot-based solutions utilizing single electrons. Concurrently, diamond defect technology has progressed, enabling control over 100 electrons.

The advantage of quantum dots is perceived in their manufacturability using the same processes as traditional semiconductors, promising good scalability. This week saw the publication of two new papers on employing quantum dots as qubits. One of these methods was deemed promising enough for IBM to acquire the company that developed it.

Separately, another company has unveiled a processor capable of controlling 100 individual electrons within diamond defects. This technology, whose scalability was not immediately apparent, presents a new avenue for quantum computation.

The advancement of quantum computing necessitates a large quantity of high-quality qubits for complex calculations. The ability of various technologies to meet this demand remains a subject of ongoing discussion and development.
